In the end, Iris's story represents a profound meditation on growing up estranged in small town America-on being an outsider in a world increasingly averse to them. But as her parents' marriage starts to unravel, Iris grows more and more observant of disintegration all around her, and the simple cadences of her story quickly attain an unnerving tension as she wavers precariously between girlhood and adolescence. The story of Iris's childhood is at first beguiling and innocent: hers is a world filled with bell-bottoms and Barbie dolls, Shrinky Dinks and Shaun Cassidy records, TV dinners and trips to grandma's. Butter is a coming of age tale set against the backdrop of small-town Minnesota during the 1970s and told from the perspective of an eleven-year-old girl, Iris, who learns from her parents that she is adopted. In fact, Panning's last collection of short stories, Super America, was a New York Times Book Review Editor's ChoiceĮnter this exciting new novel, the best work yet from a writer whose astute observations of American life are as honest as they are engaging. Anne Panning's fiction has been described as warm and original by Publishers Weekly, intelligent and humorous by the Boston Globe, graceful and wry by Booklist, and infectious and enchanting by the New York Times.

Malachi’s intrigued by Julian at first, and he soon learns there’s more to the man than his boring clothes of beige, tan, and brown a far cry from Malachi’s hot pink, lilac, and electric blue. Malachi expects tedious and boring but instead discovers a warehouse with a quirky bunch of misfit co-workers, including a stoic and nerdy boss, Julian Pollard. Each tree is cut individually and removed using horses, rather than heavy machinery, to avoid damaging underground networks of roots and fungi that allow trees to exchange resources and chemical signals. Wohlleben had been managing the forest for the municipality for almost three decades, and he had cared for it with unusual gentleness. Up in the canopy, the leaves were every possible hue of apple skin. We followed a logging road through a forest of beeches. (“When a structure is nice and vertical, it is difficult to upset its equilibrium,” he has written, of trees.) He wore muddy, size-15 army boots and a black fleece jacket that smelled of old woodsmoke. He had the slightly stiff bearing of a person who thinks often about the importance of uprightness. He’s a tall man with a long head and a short gray beard his vanishing hair was shaved close to the skull. One cold afternoon in the autumn of 2018, in a forest outside the tiny village of Hümmel, in Rhineland-Palatinate, I went for a walk with the German forester Peter Wohlleben. A deliciously entertaining and moving story of innocence and experience, love and sacrifice, In Lucia's Eyes takes the reader on an entrancing journey from the canals of Amsterdam to those of Venice, painting a glorious portrait of the eighteenth century. What Lucia doesn't know is that Seingalt will go down in history as one of the world's greatest lovers, Casanova. What Seingalt doesn't know is that he has already met the veiled woman many years ago, in another life. He sets her a challenge: if she can find a woman who has suffered after falling in love with him, she is entitled to resist his charms if not, she should play his game. He is, to all appearances, Monsieur le Chevalier de Seingalt she is a courtesan, well-known in Amsterdam for the fact that she never removes her veil. Amsterdam 1758, and a man is artfully seducing a woman. Craig Childs delves into the primacy of the land and the profound nature of the more-than-human. KEVIN FEDARKO, author of The Emerald Mile From the author of The Secret Knowledge of Water and Atlas of a Lost World comes a deeply felt essay collection focusing upon a vivid series of desert icons-a sheet of virga over Monument Valley, white seashells in dry desert sand, boulders impossibly balanced. Book Synopsis Its impossible to imagine another writer in America who is better than Craig Childs at elegizing the fearsome and confounding appeal of our most austere landscapes. About the Book Writer and adventurer Childs dwells upon desert icons-human, animal, and otherwise-in these contemplative and visceral essays.al essays. This book.as are the first 5 in one way or another. I love the characters and their attitudes with their partners, their friends and the way they operate their club, Collars and Cuffs. I will more than likely buy the first 5 so I will have them at my reading beck and call. I read the first 5 books, several times, on Hoopla and when they didn't get the rest of the series, I bought them. This is my absolutely favorite M/M Romance series. They may be off on a new journey together, but their destination will rock them both to the core. It's up to Alan to pick up the pieces and show Dorian there are better ways to fly. But the disoriented young man discovered cowering in a hotel room is not the Dorian they know and love. When Dorian disappears, Alan and his friend Leo set out to find him. Alan Marchant has been watching Dorian with interest for a while and knows there's more to Dorian than his label of "pain slut" suggests. Dorian's search takes him out of the safe environment he's known for years, out of his depth, and into a realm of deep, dark trouble. Something he won't find at Collars & Cuffs. Unteachable, Dorian can take anything and everything a Dom can throw at him. For six years, Dorian's chased a feeling that remains tantalizingly out of his reach. Collars and Cuffs: Book Six Anyone who frequents Collars & Cuffs knows Dorian Forrester is built for pain, including Dorian himself. It was interesting to read about the election process of the time and compare it to today. Is it weird that I developed a bit of a crush on a long-dead president? On top of that, he seemed like a genuinely good man – warm, thoughtful, honest, principled, a good friend and a devoted family man – the kind of guy you’d like in the White House. – Sported a beard that would make today’s hipsters envious – Distinguished service as a Brigadier General in the Union Army – Becoming the head of a higher education institution at 25 James Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, elected in 1880. I found it just the right level of detail. While Destiny of the Republic focuses in depth on Garfield’s assassination, it does cover, at a high level, information from his entire life, so we get a very good idea of the type of man he was. Many of the leading Presidential biographies are around 1000 pages and likely go into deeper detail than Destiny of the Republic does. This one caught my eye not only because a blog reader recommended it (thanks, Mark!), but also because it’s a manageable 432 pages. February’s challenge was to read a biography of a US President, since Presidents Day is in February. I read Destiny of the Republic as part of the 2020 Thoughtful Reading Challenge. This book about President James Garfield’s life and assassination is engrossing and devastating. Destiny of the Republic has both things going for it. Historical nonfiction can be so good when the subject is interesting and the author is talented. |
